Quick reminder: Commons Photographers meeting this Saturday[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

This is a quick reminder that our next meeting will happen on Saturday, August 5th. If you haven't registered yet and you're interested in learning more about underwater photography and “Flickypedia”, please sign up on this page. Also, I invite you to fill out this survey created by the people who are working on the Flickr-to-Wikimedia Commons software. Your input will make a difference.

We haven't had a virtual meeting in a while and I'm so looking forward to this weekend!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 02:15, 4 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Text for village pump request[edit]

To whom it may concern:

I found your page https://www.flickr.com/photos/ms_abitibi/ while doing research for the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia, and thought your images [regarding the Altiplano-Atacama-Andes] might be appropriate for inclusion in our articles concerning https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salar_de_Pedernales.

I am specifically seeking your permission to use this image: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ms_abitibi/albums/72177720309160518 and https://www.flickr.com/photos/ms_abitibi/albums/72177720308769186

I would like to include your image in these articles: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salar_de_Pedernales

Wikipedia (https://www.wikipedia.org/) is a free encyclopedia that is collaboratively edited by volunteers from around the world. Our goal is to create a comprehensive knowledge base that may be freely distributed and available at no charge.

Normally we ask permission for material to be used under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License. This means that although you retain the copyright and authorship of your own work, you are granting permission for all others (not just Wikipedia) to use, copy, and share your materials freely — and even potentially use them commercially — so long as they do not try to claim the copyright themselves, nor prevent others from using or copying them freely.

You can read this license in full at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_Creative_Commons_Attribution-ShareAlike_3.0_Unported_License

This license expressly protects creators from being considered responsible for modifications made by others, while ensuring that creators are credited for their work. There is more information on our copyright policy at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Copyrights

We choose the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License because we consider it the best available tool for ensuring our encyclopedia can remain free for all to use, while providing credit to everyone who donates text and images. This may or may not be compatible with your goals in creating the materials available on your website. Please be assured that if permission is not granted, your materials will not be used at Wikipedia — we have a very strict policy against copyright violations.

We also accept licensing of images under other free-content licenses. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags

With your permission, we will credit you for your work in the image's permanent description page, noting that it is your work and is used with your permission, and we will provide a link back to your website. Please explicitly state under which license you grant permission.

We invite your collaboration in writing and editing articles on this subject and any others that might interest you. Please see the following article for more information. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Introduction

Thank you for your time.

Kindly,

Franklin Expedition Daguerreotypes[edit]

Delighted to find that that you have uploaded these images. Just a couple of questions:

  • is there a reason why the individuals are not named in the descriptions? Only some are identified indirectly as they are entered in name categories, where they exist.
  • The EngWP article notes that Daguerreotypes are normally mirror-images, though right-way images were possible. Perhaps that should be mentioned as the Sotheby's catalogue only notes, without explanation, that the ILN engravings are reversed. Asserting that these particular images are reversed might be considered OR (on the evidence of the Franklin portrait, the medals/decorations would have been worn on the left breast).

@Davidships: I named and categorised those for whom I could determine the identity. If you can identify others, please do so!
If examination of the clothing etc. indicates the pictures are mirror images, I see no harm in mentioning that. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:46, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks. The IDs are in the source, so I will add them.
Regarding reverse imaging, only Franklin himself is obvious to me on account of the medals/decorations; I looked at the uniforms - although, of those that can be ascertained, the majority button with the persons apparent left over right, but there are a few the other way round. As dagerreotypes themselves cannot be manipulated ex-camera, that is curious - but my knowledge of uniforms and sartorial norms of the time is close to zero - there seem to be examples of both in Category:Historical uniforms of the Royal Navy.
